The Collen Charitable Trust – September 2, 1998

The Collen Trust, later renamed The Collen Charitable Trust, is an irrevocable trust constituted on September 2, 1998 by Désiré Collen under the Cayman Islands’ STAR Law (Special Trusts Alternative Regime) of 1997. Its purpose is the furtherance and support of all manner of medical research.

Gift of t-PA Royalty Rights – October 8, 1998

The assets of the Collen Charitable Trust are primarily derived from an irrevocable gift by Désiré Collen. They consist of his remaining royalty income, as one of the three inventors of  tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA). The income is the result of the licensing agreement between the technology transfer department LRD of the University of Leuven and the American biotech company Genentech Inc. of South San Francisco,
